Checking your Fork Truck for Safety
Similar to any industrial machinery, the fork truck should be utilized carefully. However, not like a car, steering is done on the rear wheel giving the equipment a different center of balance. Anybody utilizing a fork truck and everyone working within the vicinity of this particular machinery must know safe operating measures and workplace safety guidelines.

Safe operation of a fork truck initially involves inspecting the truck prior to driving it. Operators should inspect for potential dangers such as worn tires and fuel leaks. The lifts, forks and the overhead guard must be carefully inspected. The safety handle must be used just when the forklift is being mounted.

The horns, alarms and lights should be inspected to ensure that they are operating well. Gauges and monitors must be adjusted properly. The seat should be adjusted and safety belt fastened before starting the truck.

Taking cautious turns and choosing a lower rate of speed would help the operator avoid tipping the machine. If the load blocks the driver's vision, the truck must be driven in reverse gear. Be aware of the location of any pedestrians and obstacles while driving.

in order to avoid any chance of injury, the operator must always sit within the cage enclosure and keep all the body parts inside. The forks must be kept a few inches above the floor while driving. Never raise or lower lifts when you are driving or the truck could become unstable. Do not allow anybody to walk under lift when the engines are running.

Stopping at intersections and watching for approaching traffic are basics for driving safely. It is really a great idea to sound the horn occasionally and before proceeding when operating within aisles. That way, you would warn any approaching individual to your presence.
